Reflection 6- Voice & Poetry

'Starting strong is good. Finishing strong is epic' - Robin Sharma

I am looking over the Crocus Bay hill with excitement.

I am watching November cruise swiftly by which means that this semester is on its final stretch.

I am sad to say that although we still have a few more weeks to go through with these courses…

I am happy to announce that we’ve been introduced to the Six traits of writing and now we are on the last one…Voice

I have a voice and you do too,

Surprisingly enough even inanimate objects or even the color blue.

Am I simply referring to the voice you hear when I speak, shout or sing?

No! I’m referring to desire, confidence, individuality, and enthusiasm!

It’s the one place where ALL students can excel

It's based on the character’s point of view…can you tell?

It’s personal…universal…

It can come from expressions that are facial!

It's like watching someone with an angry face and you ask “What’s wrong with you?”

But they reply, “Nothing. Why do you ask? I didn’t say anything.”

True!!

But didn’t they?

Didn’t the furrowed eyebrows, heaving chest, and pursed lips yell

“STAY AWAY! I’M NOT HAVING A GOOD DAY!”

Your voice can be loud

Even when you’re quiet

Try making funny facial expressions to see how people react

Your tone is unique! Just try it!

Just imagine how weird it was for me to hear that so many things can have a tone and it didn’t need to

Be alive and breathing. It is so interesting to hear dark deep and think of black, or cloudy skies and

Think of Grey, or tap into your senses using metaphors to describe food.

Even though voice is known as the life, soul, and breath of writing, I love when the facilitator pointed out a quote stating that “it’s the fingerprint of the author on the page.” That quote brings such clarity to the meaning of ‘Voice’ and I can appreciate why JBTE deemed it necessary to include it on this syllabus.

My reflection has quite a few features and elements of poetry. This was also touched on by the facilitator in our last session. I figure that the best way to understand and try to perfect it is to practice. Hopefully, by the time I am ready to expose my classes to this, I will be a PRO!

I tried my best to be very creative with my blog this week. Let’s see if you can be creative with your responses and feedback as well! I look forward to your reply!

  1. Hello Breanna,

I accept the challenge to creativity
Well… as I try not to settle for mediocrity
I pondered for a moment throughout your blog
To note features and elements of poetry I could recall
You’ve cooked up ingredients forming a delectable stew
That includes structure, form and sound patterns to name a few
Hitting the nail on its head, the instructor did with voice centre stage
By choosing the quote that reads, “it’s the fingerprint of the author on the page.”
Wow! Breanna! I am admiring my reflective response as it leans effortlessly to the right!
It was not intentional to create this shape, hence, my ellipses appended on the second height
So, at this curve I will have to make my end point, and say thanks for the inspiration to practise poetry at this vantage point.

    1. Bravo ! Bravo !
I saw the way it fell into the steps pattern and quickly scrambled to the poetry PDF so I could try to recall which one you were doing. I figured it was concrete until you stated that it was not intentional. Is this simply rhymed verse? Please, let me know before I have to beg! Every bone in my body is telling me that you're pulling my leg!

    2. Ohh Breanna :-), I am not pulling your leg at all!. I really enjoyed composing the poem and seeing how it turned out. However, initially, I did endeavour to create a concrete poem in the form of a cat. I knew this would have blown both of us away but then the rhymes that kept taking the cat out of shape and gave me this result. Soooo, we can say we have a 'concrete stairs' :-). I am pleased you enjoyed it!

  2. Very insightful as can be
Obviously, you have heeded what you have learnt and made it applicable I see
I have noticed that you pointed out the same quote that reverberated with me
Clearly, this was our resonating point, and the idea is key!
Every sentence in your work echoed your voice, tone and personality.

Imagine, I get to understand an author's thoughts, feelings and mood
Stamped with a unique style, flavour and choice of words that are filled with imagery

Keeping our writing interesting and engaging
Eliminates boredom and makes our readers more enlightened
Yes! So, there you see, I too appreciate your challenge in this task of responsive creativity!

Remembering of course that VOICE IS KEY!

    1. I am in love with your response! lol.
I caught on to the acrostic before I reached to the end of your reply, and I was so excited! This has definitely been one of my favourite topics from this class despite clearly realising that I didnt quite speak much about JBTE in my acrostic poem. Thank you for taking part!
